Description:

Emergency Family Shelter welcomes homeless families seeking immediate overnight shelter. In addition to shelter, families are offered meals, shower/laundry facilities and case management. Transportation to/from school may be arranged for school-aged children.

To access shelter, families must call the shelter before noon and express need for shelter for that evening. All calls are returned to interested families between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to confirm or deny a space in shelter for the evening. If a family does not have access to a phone, families may add their name in-person at The Salvation Army of Dane County.

Families who are approved for shelter in the evening are invited to share dinner with us at 4:30 pm. New families will meet with shelter staff following dinner to complete intake paperwork. All families must exit shelter by 8:00 am.

Note: Families sign-in for shelter at 4 pm. While we ask for identification (IDs and Social Security cards) it is not necessary to enter shelter. We do not require proof of parentage for the children.

Diversion
Direct: 608.250.2227

The Salvation Army provides shelter diversion services for families aimed to quickly house families and women who are experiencing homelessness to avoid the need to enter Emergency Shelter. The Diversion Specialist works individually with families and women to identify solutions and alternative housing arrangements that quickly resolve the family or women’s housing crisis through a combination of direct service and financial assistance.

Holly House
Direct: 608.250.2227

Holly House provides transitional housing for single homeless women (age 18 or older) without children in their care. The home can accommodate eight women who are welcome to stay for a period of 24 months while they re-establish self-sufficiency. Women must have a source of income, as all are expected to contribute to program expenses. Residents participate in intensive case management as they work toward permanent housing, employment readiness, and practical life skills.

Rapid Rehousing
Direct: (YWCA) 608.257.1436

In partnership with the YWCA, United Way and The Road Home, The Salvation Army offers subsidized housing and case management for families transitioning from homelessness to housing. Families must have at least one child under age 18. Program participation may last up to one year.

House-Ability
Direct: (YWCA) 608.257.1436

The Salvation Army joined with the YWCA and The Road Home to create House-Ability, which subsidizes housing and provides case management for families transitioning from homelessness to housing. At least one adult in the family must have a disabling condition. The disability must be a chronic physical, mental or emotional impairment that impedes the individual’s ability to live without supportive services. Participants contribute 30% of their income toward program fees. Program participation may last until a family’s youngest child turns 18 years old.

The RISE Program is dedicated to helping homeless families obtain permanent housing and stabilizing relatively quickly, in months rather than years. Our rapid-rehousing program focuses on housing relocation from homelessness to a family's own housing. RISE provides: security deposit payment, monthly rental assistance, landlord/tenant advocacy and ongoing in-home based case management. The program will generally last one year, but case management services may be extended for up to another year upon client request. The client will be fully stabilized in their home without assistance by the end of the program. Families must have at least one child under the age of 18.

Dane County Assists With New Starts (DAWNS)
Direct: 608.250.2227

Participants in the DAWNS program will be offered a rapid rehousing package. This consists of weekly case management sessions, security deposit, and first month's rental assistance. Additional rental assistance may be granted, but is approved on an individual basis. The program is barrier-free and participants can move in with little or no income.

DAWNS Families: The Salvation Army offers move in costs and intensive in-home case management for families transitioning from homelessness to housing. Families must have at least one child under age 18.
